  • Handbook on Electricity Safety and Energy Saving in Shrimp Farming
    Author:
    Date of publishing : 07/30/2018
    Description :
Energy demand is an essential need in all aspects of life, from daily activities to production. Not only in industrial sectors, but the demand for electricity and safety in shrimp farming is also an urgent issue for shrimp farmers. The shrimp farming industry is undergoing significant transformation, shifting from traditional methods to modern super-intensive farming, using many electrical devices. However, the shrimp farming environment and energy-saving practices are still weak, as farmers lack deep experience and skills in designing, operating, and using electrical systems safely and efficiently. Therefore, ensuring safe and energy-efficient electricity usage in shrimp farming is crucial for farmers during the farming process. The Electricity Safety Handbook for Shrimp Farming is supported by the "Sustainable and Inclusive Shrimp Value Chain Development in Vietnam – SusV" project, funded by the EU and implemented by Oxfam Vietnam and the International Center for Aquaculture and Fisheries Sustainability (ICAFIS). The handbook was developed to help shrimp farmers understand the design, operation, and efficient use of equipment. It also provides guidance on methods for energy saving and safe electricity use to minimize electrical risks. As this is the first edition of the handbook, we acknowledge that some errors may be present. We, the authors, kindly welcome feedback from readers to further improve and update the handbook. It aims to address capital needs, secure sales and purchases, reduce risks, and improve efficiency. This holistic approach involves analyzing the value chain to identify optimal financing points, allowing capital to flow both upstream and downstream within the chain. To support sustainable shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta, the “Sustainable and Equitable Shrimp Value Chain Development in Vietnam (SusV)” project, funded by the European Union under the SWITCH Asia programme, was implemented from 2016–2019 in Cà Mau, Bạc Liêu, and Sóc Trăng provinces. The project aims to promote economic development and poverty reduction by improving the social and environmental impacts of shrimp farming and processing. It also focuses on improving access to finance, enhancing production efficiency, empowering small-scale shrimp farmers, and advocating for sustainable production standards in government value chain finance policies. The project adopts a multi-stakeholder approach involving the public sector, private enterprises, NGOs, and civil society. • The Vietnamese shrimp value chain and its sustainable development impetus
    Author: OXFAM, ICAFIS
    Date of publishing : 08/17/2018
    Description :
Currently, shrimp farming is the main source of income for about one million people in Vietnam, 80% of whom are small-scale farmers. Additionally, the shrimp sector provides jobs for nearly three million workers in processing plants. Therefore, value chain linkages are essential for sustainable development, connecting farmers, businesses, and regulators. The project "Sustainable and Equitable Shrimp Value Chain Development in Vietnam (SusV)", implemented by Oxfam in Vietnam in partnership with ICAFIS, has been carried out in Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, and Ca Mau provinces. After half of its implementation period, the project has achieved encouraging results, widely covered by the media. To share insights and foster stakeholder engagement, Oxfam and the Information and Communications Publishing House released the book “Value Chain and Growth Potential for Vietnamese Shrimp”, a collection of notable articles on Vietnam’s shrimp industry published between 2016 and 2018. The content covers strategic development directions for agriculture, value chain linkages, financial policies, expert analyses, and successful shrimp farming models in the Mekong Delta. The book aims to help readers better understand the project’s goals and the dedication of those involved, serving as a bridge between shrimp farmers, enterprises, experts, and policymakers, contributing to sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction in Vietnam.
